Empowerment Day at the CO Capitol
Yesterday, YWCA Boulder County hosted its first “Women’s Empowerment Day” at the Colorado State Capitol, bringing nearly 40 multi-generational women together to show the power of our collective voices.
Students from Centaurus High School and University of Colorado Boulder joined community advocates to meet with legislators and talk about bills that are important to the YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women.
As YWCA Boulder County CEO Debbie Pope commented to 9NEWS, “I think it’s incredibly important for female voices to be at the forefront right now because there are so many issues that are impacting us directly. Whether it’s the autonomy of our body, access to health, access for safety... equal pay for equal work, and economic advancement and equity, the list goes on and on."
"When we're not staying at the forefront of these issues is when we start to see them slide and I think now more than ever, every female, of every generation right now, we have to make sure that our collective voice is really heard," said Pope.

A huge shout out to Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis, Representative Judy Amabile, and Representative Junie Joseph for making this day possible, taking the time to meet with us to answer questions, and to hear the issues that are important to us in our daily lives as students and women in the community.
We were thrilled to have the experience of observing the House and Senate sessions from the gallery and on the floor, where many state senators and representatives introduced themselves and were eager to hear from the students.
Thank you to Pam Malzbender and Zonta Foothills advocates for bringing your perspective, curiosity, and energy to the day!
To all of the students who attended—this is just the beginning of your journey in creating change and impact in our community. We look forward to continuing our work together!
